Layback & External Rotation Strength

Your arm acts like a catapult when throwing a baseball and it’s in full external rotation when the catapult is cocked all the way back. But here’s a secret — the arm doesn’t just touch the end range of external rotation before firing forward. It actually stays in max external rotation as the upper half begins to rotate. What does that tell us?

We need to have the strength to hold max external rotation for a few clicks during the delivery.

If you are unable to hold max external rotation through movement as more and more force is applied to the arm, then you will not be able to throw at your max potential. External rotation strength is very important.

And you can see the Pitch AI results from one of our Beimel Elite Athletics athletes as proof. Follow the blue line measuring external rotation forces and you can see the line flatten out before external rotation is released.

Joe Beimel, 13-year big leaguer and co-founder of Beimel Elite Athletics, takes you through two different external rotation isometric holds that you can do after throwing to increase your ability to hold this position — to hold the catapult back as long as possible before the arm fires forward.

At the end of the video, Joe uses an ArmCare dynamometer which measures the force put into the wall during external rotation. The ArmCare App is a big part of what we do here at Beimel Elite Athletics. The app can show you exactly how strong your arm is in any direction and can compute a personalized ArmCare routine to maximize your arm’s throwing velocity and health.
